Note what the sign says... BEWARE of Rattlesnakes. Yup, it was serious. There were rattlers. Never having heard one in the wild, it was a little disconcerting. I think that it had been cold for so long that this beautiful day with the sun shining brought them out to sun. In the interest of full disclosure, the one that is all curled up was in the middle of the road and we saw him and took the picture from the car. There was NO chance we'd get this close to a wild snake that was making this much noise without a good 6 inches of steel between him and us. On the other hand, the one that is in the grass really was only a couple of feet away and he was slithering his way through the grass. We also probably would not have gotten this close if there had not been someone else standing there even closer than we were. I figured if the snake wanted to strike out, it was unlikely he would go around that crazy man to reach us. So, we were actually able to get pretty close. The kids thought that was way cool. I thought it was way cool too.
