MMS Sixth Grade Dodgeball Tournament

This may have been one of the funniest school sponsored events I have ever attended.  The kids were split into teams and some of them went all out with the "uniforms".   It was pretty funny.  It was set up in brackets, double elimination.  Daniel's team came in 5th out of 17 or something like that.  Very enjoyable event to watch.

School concert

Macey's music teacher is really fun and has a real rapport with the kids.  She made the concert very fun by picking great songs and giving the kids entertaining lines to say during the show.  The concert was on St. Patricks Day so everyone was in green.  Macey even made a special necktie for the concert which honestly was a little out of character for her but made it even more awesome to see her with it on!  They did the Cups song and the kids had to try out to be a Cupper...Macey was one of the chosen and she did a great job.  She was also Nevada...see her sign??? for the 50 Nifty States song.

I love the states song.  Not sure there are many people who actually use this song in their job but I do-throughout the year I have to work with state tax returns and we periodically work with state apportionment...knowing the states in alphabetical order is actually a valuable skill in my line of work!!

Macey had a speaking part.

Cups song-go Macey!!

March 2015

Jason went to Vegas for the 21st annual March Madness adventure...kids were on spring break...Macey's music concert...Daniel's dodgeball tournament...US Map puzzle in our spare time...9.8 inches of snow after weeks of spring like weather (at least I got to use our snowblower after we bought it and then had the least snowy winter in history (that's not official, by the way))...going to the library to hear a reenactment of the adventures of a young Civil War soldier from Minnesota...Cindy started playing in an adult soccer league (Macey went to watch a game and afterwards she was like Mom, I was so stressed every time you got the ball!  Is that what its like for you when I play?  I said yes , it is!!  So funny!!!!)...Macey started playing indoor soccer at Blast (she really loves indoor, the constant game with no interuptions plus her knock out shot make it very very fun for her).
Howard claims this is the hardest puzzle he's ever worked on and I agree.  It was crazy hard!  We finally finished it and to our annoyance there were two pieces that we could not find.  How frustrating is that?????

Daniel's MN Studies teacher was offering extra credit for going to listen to this reenactment at the local library.  I dragged Daniel there and lo and behold there were a number of his friends there, including Jakob who got to go up front and try on the outfit of the soldier.  He was a real ham!

Student Council

M was on on student council this year.  While we are fiercely loyal to Lake Marion, our neighborhood elementary school, we grudgingly send our daughter to Oak Hills because its where the Ignite program is.  But, I have to admit I like the student council set up at OHE (LME does not even have one) so that's a point in the OHE column.  Our first introduction was when M was in 3rd grade and the teacher sent an email home that 22 kids in the class were running for 2 student council spots.  She warned us there would be some disappointed 3rd graders that night!!  She was not wrong, and Macey was one of them.  This year her 4th grade teacher made it anonomous, the kids had to write a speech and then the teacher gave all of them on a no-name basis.  Macey won this year based on her
"speech".  She's had a good time-they did a food drive and delivered the food to the food shelf, they organized "fun days" for the school, do other fundraisers and service projects.  Its a nice program and a good way for these younger kids to get active in their community.  Here's Macey by one poster she helped make with the student council.

Josh's Valentines Day Party

I manned the "wet cottonball toss" station.  The kids had fun...the groups got rowdier and rowdier as the party progressed.  Can I say for about the millionth time that I super admire teachers?  Its pretty amazing what they do...and what they deal with on a daily basis!!!

D and J's new baby

Not sure we're allowed to post pics of him so no names or locations but so glad to have this little guy in the world!!

Benefit Show at SMDA

Our first adventure with a costume change...Macey did her kick routine as well as her tap routine for the benefit show.  My kid can tap dance, that was such a funny thing to realize!  I helped out backstage and was supposed to chaperone the dance class from before the show until they performed.  However, as fate would have it there was only one kid who was in tap and not in kick so she and I snuck into the show and watched the kick line perform then I was able to watch the tap routine as well-worked out nicely for me.  The whole changing of outfits and redoing the hair with a different do and different hairpiece was interesting but we managed!  Here are some before and after as well as one of Maggie who came to watch.

February 2015-Welch Village with MMS 6th Graders

Ski lift with Sawyer, Daniel and Sam

Daniel the ski king.

Hi Eve!!

February 2015...

This month we went to a SuperBowl party at Julie's (its becoming a tradition), went to lots of basketball including an out of town trip to Rochester for a tournament, soccer training continued and Macey had her first dance recital of the year, we did Baskets and Bingo at LME and at least ducked into Bingo night at OHE.  We checked out one of Ben's hockey games, had a couple of sleepovers with various kids-n-cousins and I played hookie from work to go to skiing with Daniel's class at Welch Village and to help at J's Valentines Day party.  Our friends John and Donna adopted a baby boy, and so much more...It was a busy month!

From the Draft folder...Fall 2011...Days 2 and 3...Not so fun.

So...Day 2 drop off was not very fun; poor baby cried and pulled on the door after I left. They said he did okay but he was crying when Jason went to pick him up after 3 hours. Yikes. Today's drop off was better...he settled right down after I left and ate his breakfast. But Jason went by to check on him (there is a monitor in the front entry where you can see the kids and they can't see you) and as opposed to the past two days when he was cheerfully playing each time Jason went to check on him, this time he was standing by the door crying...poor buddy.

NOTE from 2015:  What this doesn't say is that the next week when I dropped him off, expecting the tears and screams, he found his seat and waved me out the door, perfectly happy...and after that there were no more tears.

Party Times: Another one from the Draft folder, Macey's birthday October 201? (we think 2011)

This was in my Drafts folder, I don't know why it was never published...priceless

After the death of a loved one, different people process the information in different ways. Here are some of the things that we did in the days and weeks after my Dad, my kids' beloved PopPop, died.

Daniel to Macey the night we told them about PopPop: "Do you think PopPop's spirit will come get us tonight?" Granny Irene assured them that PopPop was too busy getting into heaven to come and bother them. Later I told Daniel that PopPop would never do anything scary but that he would always be there if Daniel needed help to make the right decision about something.

Daniel to me at the funeral: "I wish PopPop could be here."

Daniel to me during the weekend we buried my Dad: "Well, I just think PopPop is sitting on the beach somewhere."

Daniel to my mom when he talked to her the week after the funeral. We were all home in Minnesota and she was at her home in NC. I could only hear Daniel's part of the conversation but you can probably fill in the blanks in terms of what my mom said. I knew, but Daniel did not, that my sister and brother were both staying with my Mom at her house that particular night. "Grandmom, are you doing okay?" Response from the other end. "Oh. Because it must be lonely there all by yourself with no one there." Response from the other end. "Oh, that's good."

Just what I needed, another reason to start crying again.

This morning when it was snowing like crazy and we had two or three inches on top of the major storm from last weekend that dumped 17-20 inches of snow in our yard the first thing I thought was that I needed to call my Dad and tell him about the additional snow that was falling outside. I believe it will be a long time before I stop thinking those kinds of thoughts.

For Christmas we bought my mom a brand new comforter set: bedspread, bed skirt, pillow shams, throw pillows, the works. It came in a very large box that we wrapped and presented to her at our family Christmas gathering. As my sister Carey was bringing the box to my mom someone said "I wonder what that is!" and Daniel said "Maybe its PopPop!" I have no idea why my sister Carey and I thought it was so funny but both of us about busted a gut laughing at Daniel. Usually in that situation he would renege on his comment because he hates to be laughed at but this time he insisted, even over our hysterics, that "Well, maybe it is PopPop!" I guess Daniel knew what his Grandmom would want for Christmas more than anything else. Oh well, I think she liked the comforter well enough.
