Day 4: Earthquake Lake

Uncle Stephen told us that there were mountain goats living in the mountains and hills around Earthquake Lake.  He told us how to spot them...look for patches of white.  And see if it moves.  We had been walking around for a while reading all the signs and listening to Uncle Stephen tell us about the night the earthquake hit and the campground was buried under the mountain that just slid out of place, across a road and settled where it clearly had no business being.  Nature is stunning.  The monument to the people lost, including families, it very moving.

We eventually turned our eyes to the hills hoping to see one of those illusive mountain goats.  After some time I spotted a patch of white, indeed two, but after all of us looked, looked through binoculars, looked through the telescope, looked with our bare eyes and looked and looked we concluded no, it was not a mountain goat, it was just a white rock.  So we all turned our backs and continued wandering. Except Macey.  She was the only one who had the patience to keep watching and eventually, it paid off...the "white patch" moved and it lifted its head and looked down at us.  And her companion, who never really came fully into view, moved amongst the brush behind her.  It was a mountain goat with her baby.  No pictures, unfortunately since they were too far to really see well with the naked eye never mind take pictures of but it was cool anyway.  They were somewhere up in the mountains just doing their thing.

This is me, Josh and Uncle Stephen heading down from the monument.
